Creating a book that synthesizes transcripts from Kurzgesagt–In a Nutshell's Optimistic Nihilism by and exurb1a's The Ants. Content consists of discussions on (optimistic ) nihilism, meaning, and the pursuit of knowledge. Visual language inspired by Dadaism, a movement where absurd and nihilistic philosophy emerged from World War I.

Optimistic nihilism by Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

The twinkling lights are not shining beautifully for us. They just are.

Kyrzgesagt opens by reminding us that the universe isn’t geocentric and we aren’t special.  It introduces nihilism in a personable, jargon-less way and addresses the fear it can evoke in people—especially when considering the finite time we have on this earth. Optimistic nihilism suggests that while we  live in a meaningless universe, we get the chance to experience ourselves and  all that the universe has to offer.

The ants by exurb1a

"What is this all for?"

The Ants tells a fictional story of a person who is reading and sees an ant on their book. They have a conversation and the curious ant asks the human a series of simple, yet existential questions, such as “What is this all for?” The human, though exasperated, answers the questions. After the ant leaves, the human begins to ask the same question, seeking a response from the universe.

dada art as inspiration

I treated my pull quotes like posters, referencing posters from Dada posters. The dialogue from The Ant was placed like a Dada poster I saw, and I drew inspiration for other pages similarly.
